Specialist transfer

Your 8 mm films are scanned, not filmed from a screen

Super 8 and Regular 8 are photographic film formats, not video cassettes. We do not project the film onto a wall and record it with a camera. A dedicated scanner captures the film frame by frame, avoiding projector flicker, screen distortion and unnecessary wear on the original.

We work with family collections, filmmakers, clubs, schools, municipalities, museums and smaller archives. If you do not know which format you have, send clear photographs of the reels, boxes, labels and the beginning of the film. We will help identify it before you decide.

Every frame captured

The film advances through a dedicated scanner and each frame is captured separately for a stable digital result.

Wetgate included

Fluid-assisted scanning can make many fine vertical surface scratches less visible.

Originals protected

We inspect the reel before work, handle it carefully and return every original after delivery.

What we do

One careful workflow from reel to digital file

Choose a straightforward viewing copy or add processing for material intended for editing, an exhibition or a long-term archive.

01

2.7K frame-by-frame scanning

Detailed source capture up to 2728 × 1536 pixels for modern viewing, careful cropping and further processing.

02

Wetgate film scanning

Included in the base scan to optically reduce the visibility of many surface scratches while the film is captured.

03

Optional sound capture

Available for certain Super 8 films with a preserved and usable magnetic soundtrack, after inspection.

04

Image processing

Optional stabilisation, basic colour and contrast correction, image enhancement and reel merging.

05

Practical file delivery

MP4 by secure download, USB drive or customer-supplied disk; editing or archival exports by agreement.

06

Collections and organisations

Clear reel naming, agreed order, separate files or merged programmes for family, club and institutional archives.

Formats

Super 8 and Regular 8 require correct identification

Reel diameter alone does not reliably identify the format or the amount of film. We inspect the perforations and image area.

Super 8

Introduced by Kodak in 1965, normally with smaller perforations and a larger usable image area. Some reels have a magnetic soundtrack; many are silent.

Regular 8 / Normal 8

The older 8 mm format, also called Standard 8. It uses different perforations and a smaller image area than Super 8.

What we do not routinely scan

Our regular service specialises in Super 8 and Regular 8. We currently do not offer routine 16 mm or 35 mm scanning.

Honest quality

What 2.7K and wetgate really mean

Good digitisation preserves what is actually on the film. It should not be sold with promises that the original cannot support.

Filmfabriek Pictor Pro
01

2.7K source capture

The Filmfabriek Pictor Pro captures up to 2728 × 1536 pixels. The extra source detail is useful for cropping, stabilisation and preparing a clean viewing file; it does not invent detail that was never recorded.

02

Wetgate limitations

Wetgate can optically soften many fine surface scratches. Deep scratches, missing emulsion, broken perforations, severe fading, poor focus and exposure errors may remain visible.

03

Sound after inspection

Most home movies are silent. Sound capture is possible only when a compatible magnetic stripe is present and sufficiently preserved. Original noise, interruptions or speed instability may remain audible.

04

Appropriate output

MP4 is the standard practical delivery file. If you plan to edit, preserve or exhibit the footage, tell us first so we can agree on a suitable additional export.

Process

From first photographs to returned originals

You receive a clear scope before work starts and keep control over optional processing.

  1. 1

    Send photographs or arrange delivery

Show the reels, boxes, labels and any visible damage. You may also deliver in person by appointment.

  2. 2

    Format and condition check

We inspect the format, winding, joins, perforations and visible signs of brittleness or damage.

  3. 3

    Confirm scope and estimate

We agree on the desired files, processing, delivery method and an estimate. Final scanning quantity is based on actual running time.

  4. 4

    Frame-by-frame wetgate scan

The film is captured carefully with the agreed settings and without filming a screen projection.

  5. 5

    Processing and quality control

We complete the selected corrections, check the files and keep reel names and order consistent.

  6. 6

    Digital delivery and return

You receive the agreed files and every original reel is returned by the agreed method.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Send photographs of the reel, box, labels and film edge. Reel size alone is not enough, so we confirm the format from the film and perforations.

No. Reels can be partly filled and come in different sizes. Scanning is charged by the actual running time of the film.

No. Most family films are silent. Sound capture is possible only when a suitable magnetic soundtrack is present and usable after inspection.

No. It can considerably reduce the visibility of many fine surface scratches, but deep damage, missing emulsion and other defects can remain.

The Pictor Pro source capture is 2.7K, up to 2728 × 1536. We do not market an enlarged file as true 4K capture.

MP4 is the standard practical format. Editing or archival outputs can be agreed before scanning according to their intended use.

Sometimes, but it must be inspected first. Broken joins, shrinkage, curling, stickiness or a vinegar odour may require special handling or make safe scanning impossible.

Yes. Use tracked shipping and strong packaging. Contact us first so we can confirm international return postage and, where relevant, customs requirements.

Yes. Every original reel is returned. Digitalisation does not replace careful long-term storage of the original film.

Timing depends on quantity, film condition, selected processing and current workload. After assessing the material we provide a practical estimate for your order.

Yes. Reels can remain as separate files or be combined in a clearly specified order. Number the reels before delivery if chronology matters.

Yes. A non-binding first assessment from photographs is the easiest way to identify the likely format, quantity and appropriate next step.
